Closure of the West Fraser Mill Site & Award of Closure Allowance
The Village of Fraser Lake is entering the 2026 budget planning cycle during a period of significant economic transition. The closure of the West Fraser Mill, and the subsequent approval of a closure allowance under Section 9 of the Depreciation of Industrial and Electrical Generating Facility Regulation, has created substantial financial impacts for the community.
As a result of this allowance, the assessed value of improvements on the mill site will decrease by 90 per cent. For the Village, this represents an estimated $463,000 reduction in annual tax revenue—approximately 18 per cent of the municipality’s total taxation base.
Council recognizes the seriousness of this loss and remains committed to maintaining essential services and the quality of life that residents expect. Over the past several weeks, Council has reviewed departmental budgets and identified organizational reductions intended to help offset the financial impact. These efforts are ongoing, and Council continues to explore options that balance fiscal responsibility with community needs.
A key priority for Council is ensuring that residents have the opportunity to understand the Village’s financial position and provide input on the decisions ahead. To support this, the Village will be hosting a Community Feedback Open House:
DATE: Thursday, February 19, 2026
TIME: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM
LOCATION: Fraser Lake Professional Building (298 McMillan Avenue)
Department Directors will be available to speak one‑on‑one with residents about the realities of the proposed 2026 budget and the services presented under the proposed budget.
The Village encourages all residents to share their perspectives on the services that matter most to them and the priorities they believe should guide the 2026 budget with the elected officials available at this event. Your input is vital as we work together to navigate this period of financial adjustment.
Updates will continue to be posted on the Village website at Fraserlake.ca as more information becomes available.
